Message From The Chairman

Fellow Deltans, I hope this broadcast finds you exceedingly well, in good health, joy and peace as we look forward towards the smooth conduct of the local government elections in Delta State scheduled for July 13, 2024.

I am profoundly grateful to all Deltans, residents in the state and in Diaspora especially The Leadership of the 10 participating political parties, political aspirants, and other critical stakeholders for their determined cooperation and support towards the conduct of the elections.

It symbolizes the individual and collective drive of a people who are committed to nurture and strengthen democratic institutions at the grassroots.

It is also a unique opportunity for enfranchise Deltans to exercise their civic duties and responsibilities in electing 25 local government chairmen, 25 vice chairmen, and 500 councillors to fill vacant positions at the local government as provided for by the DSIEC law of 2017.

The Delta State Independent Electoral Commission is determined to play its avowed role as impartial arbiter in the electoral process in compliance with relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution and the DSIEC Law of 2017. The legal algorithms that bind us as a Commission are founded on the principles of fairness, equity and justice in ensuring that the elections are free and fair, credible and transparent. There shall be no compromises whatsoever and political parties and aspirants shall be given a level playing ground.

We are impressed by the good candour and peaceful disposition of the Chairman of political parties as well as the chairmanship candidates of the 10 participating political parties across the political divide as evinced by the signing of the Peace Accord with DISEC in the presence of the heads of security agencies in the state on Monday 8th July 2024.

Our expectations are therefore high, because the peaceful terms of the peace accord shall most likely cascade downwards to their political followers and supporters, which translates to the establishment of an overwhelming peaceful regime before, during, and after the elections.

Deltans are generally known to be peaceful. This broadcast, therefore, is a wake-up call to Deltans, particularly the leadership of the various Political parties, contestants and the electorate to see tomorrow's election as a game of sportsmanship and not a do or die affair.

Therefore, the use of force to intimidate and spread fear among the electorate and political opponents should be discouraged. Rigging of elections, snatching of ballot boxes, impersonation, manipulation of figures, use of illegal firearms or daggling of dangerous weapons at polling units, represent an attack on the roots of democracy.

However, be assured that there shall be adequate security presence in all the nooks and crannies of the state, and the security elections nexus by security agencies is well under control to perceive and neutralize potential threats through advanced technology. The security agencies have assured us that any infractions or electoral breaches shall be promptly reported to security agencies for prosecution, and anyone found guilty shall be severely dealt with in accordance with the law.

All Deltans have a stake in the peaceful growth and development of our dear state, and in ensuring that we reap monumentally from the dividends of democracy. Let us, therefore, join hands together to build on our past successes and huge developmental strides by choosing our local government chairmen and councillors wisely and peacefully tomorrow, July 13, 2024. Thank you
